More about South Gate Angkor Thom

Why Visit: The South Gate is the most famous and best-preserved of the five monumental entrances to the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Built under King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century, it is an iconic example of Bayon-style architecture. Visitors come to marvel at the towering gopura (gate tower) featuring four colossal, serenely smiling faces of Lokeshvara (or possibly the king himself), and the spectacular causeway flanked by 54 devas (gods) and 54 asuras (demons) pulling on the body of the naga (serpent) in the Churning of the Sea of Milk myth. The gate offers a powerful sense of arrival and a perfect introduction to the grandeur of Angkor Thom.

Location: The South Gate is located approximately 7 km north of Siem Reap, serving as the main entrance point to the ancient city of Angkor Thom. It is situated at the end of a bridge over the moat that encircles the ancient city.

Activities: Photograph the four massive, smiling faces on the gate tower, an emblem of Khmer artistic genius. Walk along the stunning causeway to admire the detailed sculptures of gods and demons holding the naga. Enter the ancient city of Angkor Thom, as this gate is typically the starting point for exploring temples like the Bayon, the Terrace of the Leper King, and the Baphuon. Observe the surrounding moat and jungle, appreciating the scale of the ancient city’s fortifications.

Ticket Price: Entry is included with the purchase of an Angkor Pass, which is required to visit all temples within the Angkor Archaeological Park.

1-day pass: $37 USD

3-day pass: $62 USD

7-day pass: $72 USD

Visitor Tips: The South Gate is often crowded, especially in the early morning for sunrise tours. Visit in the late afternoon for a quieter experience and softer light for photography. The gate is still used as a roadway, so be mindful of vehicles, especially tuk-tuks and motorbikes passing through the narrow archway. Take time to walk both to and from the gate along the causeway to fully appreciate the dramatic visual effect of the devas and asuras.

Best Time to Visit: The dry season from November to March offers the most comfortable weather. Visit in the late afternoon (around 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM) for beautiful lighting on the faces and fewer crowds compared to the morning peak.

The South Gate of Angkor Thom is a breathtaking and essential landmark, providing a dramatic entryway into the magnificent heart of the Khmer Empire’s last grand city.
