More about Preah Khan Temple

Why Visit:
Preah Khan Temple, built in 1191 by King Jayavarman VII, is one of the largest and most impressive temples in the Angkor complex. It served as a Buddhist monastery, a place of worship, and a center of learning, housing nearly 100,000 people including teachers and dancers. Known as the “Royal Sword,” it was built on the site of a victory over the invading Chams. The temple features intricate carvings of Hindu and Buddhist deities, large guardian statues, and a maze of vaulted corridors surrounded by moats and enclosure walls. Unlike many other temples, Preah Khan has been left largely unrestored to preserve its natural overgrowth and atmospheric ruins.
