More about Phnom Kraom

Why Visit: Phnom Kraom (or Phnom Krom), meaning ‘downstream hill,’ is a 140-meter-high hill crowned by the 9th-century Hindu temple, Prasat Phnom Krom. Built by King Yasovarman I, the temple features three weathered sandstone towers dedicated to the Hindu trinity: Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. It is one of three hilltop temples built around the ancient city of Angkor (along with Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Bok). Visitors are drawn less by the temple’s preservation and more by its dramatic setting, tranquil atmosphere, and especially the stunning panoramic sunset views over the vast Tonle Sap Lake and the surrounding countryside, making it a less crowded alternative to other sunset spots.

Location: Phnom Kraom is located approximately 12 kilometers southwest of Siem Reap town, situated on a hill near the northern end of the Tonle Sap Lake.

Activities:

Sunset Viewing: Watch a memorable sunset over the Tonle Sap Lake and the surrounding fields and villages, which is the main attraction.

Temple Exploration: Explore the three ancient sandstone towers of Prasat Phnom Krom, noting the remnants of Khmer architectural design despite significant weathering.

Panoramic Views: Enjoy the sweeping views of the Siem Reap plain, rice paddies, lotus fields, and the Tonle Sap Lake from the hilltop.

Country Drive: Enjoy the scenic drive or ride to the hill, passing through local villages and beautiful Cambodian countryside.

Visit a Modern Pagoda: Visit the modern Buddhist pagoda (Wat) located near the temple ruins.

Ticket Price: Access to Prasat Phnom Krom is included with the Angkor Archaeological Park entrance ticket.

One-day pass: $37 USD

Three-day pass: $62 USD

Seven-day pass: $72 USD (Prices subject to change.)

Visitor Tips:

Timing: Plan to arrive at least an hour or two before sunset to climb the hill and explore the temple comfortably.

Footwear: Wear comfortable shoes for the ascent up the stairs or paved road to the hilltop.

Essentials: Bring water, sunscreen for the climb, and mosquito repellent for the evening viewing.

Dress Code: While more relaxed than some temples, modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is respectful for visiting the temple and the nearby pagoda.

Combine: A visit to Phnom Kraom is often combined with a trip to one of the nearby floating villages on the Tonle Sap Lake, such as Chong Kneas.

Best Time to Visit:

Late Afternoon: For the spectacular sunset views, arriving around 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM is ideal.

Dry Season (November to March): Generally offers clearer skies for photography and more pleasant temperatures for the climb.

Rainy Season (May to October): While it can be humid, the surrounding countryside is lush and green, offering a different kind of beauty.

Phnom Kraom offers a peaceful and picturesque escape from the main temple circuits, delivering one of the most memorable sunset experiences in the Siem Reap region.
