More about Cardamom Mountains (Kravanh Mountains)

Why Visit:

The Kravanh Mountains, also known as the Cardamom Mountains, form a high mountain range in southwestern Cambodia extending about 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast to the Dâmrei Mountains. The range continues westward into the highland area of eastern Thailand. These mountains are distinguished by dense tropical rainforests on their western slopes that receive heavy rainfall (3,800 to 5,000 mm annually) contrasting with drier eastern slopes in the rain shadow. Phnom Aural, the highest peak at 1,813 meters (5,948 feet), is located here, making it Cambodia’s tallest mountain. The area is ecologically significant, rich in biodiversity including endangered species, and culturally important with ancient Khmer jar burial sites found on remote rock ledges. Historically, the remote and rugged terrain served as one of the last Khmer Rouge strongholds, helping preserve its natural and cultural heritage. The Kravanh Mountains offer trekking, wildlife watching, cultural exploration, and pristine natural scenery, accessible primarily during daylight hours.

Activities:

  • Trekking and jungle hiking in the dense rainforests.
  • Wildlife observation including rare species like Asian elephants and gibbons.
  • Exploring archaeological sites such as Khmer jar burial locations.
  • Visiting eco-tourism villages like Chi-Phat.
  • Enjoying panoramic mountain views and waterfalls.

Visitor Tips:

  • Visit during the dry season (November–March) for trail safety.
  • Use local guides to enhance safety and support local communities.
  • Bring hiking gear, insect repellent, water, and sun protection.
  • Respect natural and cultural sites.

Best Time to Visit:
