Why Visit:
Bakong is the first major sandstone temple mountain built by the Khmer Empire and served as the official state temple of King Indravarman I in 881 AD. It is a remarkable architectural and spiritual landmark, representing Mount Meru, the sacred mountain in Hindu cosmology. The temple stands as a prototype for later Khmer temple design, including Angkor Wat, and offers visitors a deep glimpse into ancient Khmer religious and royal traditions. Its sprawling complex features a five-tiered pyramid, statues of stone elephants, brick and sandstone towers, and an active Buddhist monastery that continues the site’s spiritual legacy.
Activities:
- Explore the central five-tier pyramid and admire the stone elephant statues at each corner.
- Walk through the surrounding brick and sandstone towers and smaller sanctuaries.
- Visit the modern Buddhist monastery at the temple’s east gate, where monks actively worship.
- Experience the peaceful atmosphere, especially during Buddhist holidays and ceremonies.
- Combine your visit with nearby Roluos temples such as Preah Ko and Lolei for a fuller historical tour.
- Photograph the moat and reflective pools surrounding the temple and enjoy the distinctive Khmer architecture.

Visitor Tips:
- Dress respectfully by covering shoulders and knees, as the site is both a historic monument and an active religious place.
- Wear sturdy shoes for climbing the pyramid’s steep and worn steps.

- Visit early morning or late afternoon to enjoy cooler temperatures, softer light, and fewer crowds.
- Allow 1-2 hours to explore the main temple and surrounding structures.
- Be mindful and respectful during any ongoing religious ceremonies or monk interactions; ask permission before taking photos.
