Why Visit:
Bakheng Temple is a 9th-century Hindu temple built by King Yasovarman I as the state temple of the first Khmer capital, Yasodharapura. Designed as a temple mountain, it symbolizes Mount Meru, the sacred home of Hindu gods, with its seven-tiered pyramid representing the seven heavens. The temple features five main towers arranged in a quincunx pattern atop the summit and originally had 108 smaller towers symbolizing lunar phases. Its hilltop location, 65 meters above the plain, offers spectacular panoramic views, especially popular for watching sunsets over Angkor Wat and the surrounding jungle.
